"To provide every child with an excellent education, our school systems must be able to attract and retain excellent people from top to bottom, must be able to develop systems and technologies to operate at high levels, and must have a culture of excellence that permeates every decision and every action with an unwavering focus on the best interest of students. Being a Broad Resident provides me the opportunity to engage in this critical work while building relationships with, and leveraging the expertise of, educational leaders across the country who are dedicated to this work."

Ash Solar currently serves as project manager in the office of strategic projects for the Oakland Unified School District. In this role, he manages the development and implementation of their human capital strategic plan, works with data systems to support human capital investments, leads critical process improvement initiatives, and coordinates the principal recruitment and hiring processes. Prior to assuming his current role, Solar served as the director of community initiatives at Moreno Elementary while also teaching two fourth grade language arts classes. During his time at Moreno Elementary, Solar cultivated lasting relationships with business partners, community leaders, and non-profit organizations committed to improving the education and lives of Moreno Elementary students. He also helped develop and implement appropriate processes and technologies to ensure data-driven decision making throughout the school. Solar began his teaching career as a Teach For America corps member in Houston, where he served as a bilingual fourth grade language arts teacher at Ryan Elementary. During that time, his students were recognized by USA Today for their significant growth and achievement. Solar holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth College and a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Solar is a participant in The Broad Residency in Urban Education (Class of 2009-2011), serving his two-year Residency at the Oakland Unified School District.
